A quick year in review

Having not sent a seasonal letter this year here it is.

Penny and I have continued to enjoy the Motorhome with one three week trip to Alberta plus several extended weekends in 2017. She keeps busy playing Mahjong, Bridge, working at a Thrift store, looking after Lucy (Daschund) and looking after the townhouse.

I managed two hiking trips with the Alpine Club of Canada Vancouver Island Branch. The first cut short by smoke from extensive forest fires in BC - the second to Assiniboine Park staying in one of  the Naiset huts with 5 others.

Otherwise active - singing in Victoria Philharmonic Choir, playing bridge, hiking and biking, travelling (UK and Italy in October), a men's book club, a Friday Nooners (men's) lunch, and enjoying much music close to home (living downtown Victoria).

I keep up with the world by an online subscription to the New York Times and the Economist. I was greatly saddened by the Charlie Rose news program closing down after he admitted sexual misconduct. All his interviews for the past 25 years however are still available on his web site.  He is a fantastic journalist and some of his interviews with the likes of David Brooks of the New York Times and Tom Friedman (who published "Thank you for being Late") helped made sense of what is going on in the world.

We met up with son Mark in the Okanagan in August.

In December we got together with the Granddaughters (now 12 and 10) in Ottawa for a snowy and cold (It was -31C one day) but most enjoyable Christmas.

As we start 2018 and continue to try and figure out what is going on in the world and as the media focuses on Trump and his behavior and lies etc consider what would happen if he was impeached. Mike Pence would be President. He has a secure job - the President cannot fire the Vice President. This article from the New Yorker by Jane Mayer who wrote "Dark Money" ( a superbly researched and factual book) about the Koch brothers is very troubling.  https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/10/23/the-danger-of-president-pence As one democrat has said - it is better to stick with Trump than have Pence. Pence appears to be a weak character who is just a puppet to the Libertarian Kochs and other US Billionaires.
